Frequently asked questions
Price, platforms, levels, languages, driving and privacy.
What is Japan Cat?
Japan Cat is an AI Japanese conversation app. You speak with an AI partner by voice; it replies in Japanese, corrects you and explains in English, Cantonese or Mandarin. A hands-free driving mode makes it usable in the car or on the commute.
Who makes Japan Cat?
Japan Cat is made by Alano Tech Pte. Ltd.
How much does Japan Cat cost?
Free to start with 20 AI conversation messages a month. Japan Cat Premium unlocks unlimited conversation for US$9.99 a month in the US and HK$88 a month in Hong Kong; other countries see local prices in their app store.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone (iOS 15 or later) from the App Store, Android from Google Play, and any modern browser at japancat.co/auth.
What level do I need?
Any. Choose Beginner (JLPT N5–N4), Intermediate (N3) or Advanced (N2–N1). Beginners can answer in English, Cantonese or Mandarin when stuck.
Can it explain in Cantonese?
Yes. Explanations can be in English, Cantonese (廣東話) or Mandarin (國語), written in Traditional Chinese.
Is it good for the JLPT?
Japan Cat focuses on speaking and listening, which the JLPT does not test directly, but its 1,081-card deck covers JLPT N5–N3 vocabulary and grammar, and conversation practice strengthens listening.
Does it work while driving?
Yes. Rotate the phone to landscape for a voice-only driving mode with large controls and the screen kept awake; audio plays through car Bluetooth. Set it up before you drive and keep your eyes on the road.
Is my voice recorded or shared with people?
Your speech is transcribed so the AI can reply; no human tutor listens. See the privacy policy for details on data handling and how to delete your data.
Is there a web version?
Yes — open japancat.co/auth in a browser and sign in with Google or email.
