Learn Japanese while driving — by actually speaking it

The best thing to do with Japanese in the car is to speak it. Japan Cat's driving mode is a voice-only conversation with an AI partner: you talk, it replies in Japanese, corrects you, and asks the next question — no screen, no tapping.

駅えきに行いくんですね。いいですね!

Oh, you're heading to the station. Nice!

Your sentence

駅を行きます。

駅に行きます。

Remember:

1Use に for where you are going: 駅に行きます.
2を marks what you act on, not where you go.

電車でんしゃで行いきますか。

Driving mode

No screen, no tapping.

You talk, it replies in Japanese, corrects you, and asks the next question.

Can you really learn Japanese in the car?

Yes — for speaking and listening, the car is one of the best places to practise. You are alone, you can talk out loud, and the time is already in your day. What you cannot do in the car is read, write or tap through flashcards. That is why most "learn in the car" options have been audio lessons you listen to. Japan Cat adds the missing half: you talk back, and the conversation adapts to what you said.

How driving mode works

  1. Mount your phone and connect it to the car over Bluetooth before you set off.
  2. Open Japan Cat, pick your partner (Aiko, Ren or Keiko) and your level, then rotate the phone to landscape. The app switches to driving mode: voice-only, with large controls and the screen kept awake.
  3. Speak. Japan Cat transcribes what you said, replies in natural Japanese, then plays a short explanation of mistakes and better phrasing in English, Cantonese or Mandarin.
  4. It ends each turn with a question, so the conversation keeps going without you looking at the phone.
  5. When you park, open History to see every sentence and its corrections, and My Mistakes for the ones worth practising again.

A 30-minute commute session

  • Minutes 0–5: small talk at your level — your day, the weather, where you are going.
  • Minutes 5–25: a scenario you choose — ordering at a restaurant, checking into a hotel, a job interview, chatting with a friend.
  • After you park: open My Mistakes to see the sentences you got wrong and the natural way to say them.

Treat Japan Cat like a phone call on speaker: set everything up before you drive, mount the phone, keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, and pause the conversation whenever the road needs your full attention. Follow the laws where you drive.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

What is the best way to learn Japanese while driving?

Speak, don't just listen. Audio courses help absolute beginners, but once you know basic phrases, a voice conversation partner like Japan Cat makes you produce Japanese yourself, which is what builds speaking confidence.

Does Japan Cat work with car Bluetooth?

Yes. Japan Cat plays through the audio route your phone is using, including car Bluetooth, and lets you choose the audio output in the app.

Does it work with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto?

Not as a CarPlay or Android Auto app. Use it from your mounted phone with audio over Bluetooth.

Is it only for driving?

No. The same voice-only mode works on a train, on a walk or at the gym — anywhere you can talk out loud.
